Every time a part comes off the machine, gets unclamped, and goes back on in a different orientation, it loses a little accuracy. The second setup can only be as good as the operator’s ability to locate the part against the features machined in the first setup, and that relocation introduces error. For simple parts with features on one or two faces, that’s fine. For complex parts where a bore on one face has to be perpendicular to a face on the opposite side within a couple of hundredths of a millimetre, every setup change is a chance to lose the tolerance. Multi-axis machining exists to eliminate those setup changes. A five-axis machine can reach features on multiple faces of a part in a single clamping, which means every feature is located against the same datum, and the positional relationships between features hold far tighter than they would across separate setups.
