Buyers of mining wear parts ask for hardness more than anything else, and hardness on its own is close to useless as a specification. What determines service life is whether the wear mechanism is dominated by impact or by abrasion, and the two want opposite material properties. Manganese steel arrives relatively soft, around 200 HB, and looks like the wrong answer on a hardness comparison. Under repeated heavy impact it transforms, work hardening at the struck surface to 500 HB and beyond while the material underneath stays tough and ductile. It builds its own wear surface in service. Put that same manganese steel in a low-impact sliding abrasion duty and it never hardens, so it wears fast. High-chrome white iron is the reverse case, arriving at 600 to 700 HB with hard carbides that resist sliding abrasion superbly, and cracking under the impact that manganese steel thrives on.
