Hydraulic seals fail for reasons that have almost nothing to do with the seal. The commonest one is bore surface finish, and it goes wrong in both directions, which surprises people who assume smoother is better. A dynamic seal running in a cylinder bore needs a thin film of oil between the lip and the wall. That film forms because the surface carries a fine texture that holds oil in its valleys while the peaks support the load. Machine the bore too rough and the peaks abrade the seal lip, wearing it out early. Machine it too smooth, mirror-finish it, and there are no valleys to retain oil, so the film doesn’t establish and the seal runs dry against the wall. Both produce the same complaint: the cylinder leaks and the seal looks worn. Only one is fixed by fitting a better seal, and it’s neither. Which is why hydraulic drawings specify a finish range rather than a maximum, and why honing produces the crosshatch pattern it does.
