Buyers usually compare iron and steel castings on strength and cost per kilo. Those are the visible differences. The ones that quietly reshape a project are about castability: how each metal behaves in the mold, and what geometry it will and won’t let you have. Grey iron flows well and shrinks very little as it solidifies, because graphite forming during freezing expands and offsets much of the contraction. Thin walls fill, sections can change fairly abruptly, and feeding is straightforward. Steel is the opposite case. It pours around 200°C hotter, flows less freely, and shrinks two to three times as much, so it needs heavier minimum walls, generous fillets, tapered sections that feed toward risers, and much more aggressive risering. A shape that casts easily in grey iron may need genuine redesign to cast soundly in steel, and that redesign shows up as weight, machining stock, and price.
