A gearbox is a closed oil circuit with hardened steel running against hardened steel at high contact stress. Anything loose inside it circulates until it finds a load zone. A burr left at a cross-hole intersection or a spline end doesn’t stay there once the shaft is under torque and thermal cycling. It breaks off, joins the oil, and gets rolled into a bearing raceway or a tooth flank somewhere else entirely. Which means edge condition and cleanliness are functional requirements on transmission parts, not cosmetic ones.
